The capsaicin receptor (TRPV1) is a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily of ion channels. The activation of TRPV1 is upstream of a variety of physiological and pathological processes. The broad role of this ion channel in controlling or activating the functions of many cell types has caused a dramatic increase in research into its regulatory mechanisms. In this review, we summarize current understanding of capsaicin receptor modulation at the levels of transcription, post-translation and activation.
