Little is known about the molecular factors that result in the generation of high virulent pandemic influenza viruses. In a recent Nature article, Kobasa et al. describe a macaque model in which they characterize the influenza virus that caused the devastating 1918 influenza virus pandemic. The study provides some insights on the mechanisms associated with the acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by this unique strain of influenza A virus.
