Presynaptic heterotrimeric G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are ubiquitous in the nervous system. The complexity of action of these receptors is reflected in the large number of receptors found, in an array of both soluble and membrane delimited effector targets, and in the many ultimate effects of their activation on synaptic release of neurotransmitter. These presynaptic signaling systems make the presynaptic terminal a site of synaptic integration, as important as their postsynaptic targets, if somewhat less accessible to the neuroscientist.
