Homeostatic circuitry pushes back

Mesolimbic circuitry can override homeostatic signals and promote food intake in the absence of caloric need which contributes to the onset of obesity. A recent set of studies described by Leinninger and colleagues suggest that homeostatic circuitry maybe able to re-establish normal mesolimbic signaling. They identify a distinct population of leptin receptor expressing neurons in the lateral hypothalamic area that, when exposed to leptin, restore dopamine content and reduce feeding in obese mice. The findings bring to light a potential selective target for the treatment of obesity.
