Stem cell markers and colon cancer?

Colon cancer is associated with multiple mutations. It is still not clear whether these mutations always occur in normal stem cells, consequently altering their properties to become cancer stem cells or whether more differentiated cells also acquire mutations which confer stem-like properties to produce tumor cells.
