The mechanism by which appetite and satiety are controlled and the complex interplay between gut and brain have been the subject of much research in the last decade, not least because of the obesity epidemic. In recent years the hunt has been on for physiological factors that can modulate appetite and could therefore possibly be used pharmacologically in the treatment of obesity. A recent study published in Cell has revealed a factor N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine, produced by the small intestine, which not only provides a metabolic feedback loop communicating lipid intake to the satiety center of the brain, but is a potential target in the pharmacological treatment of obesity.
